Root Canal Questions…?

Well I had my Orthodontic appointment yesterday, they said that one of my teeth was gray (The front one!) at the bottom. They said I may have a root canal and that I needed to schedule an appointment to check it out. I don’t know for sure if I have one yet but I have a few questions:

1. How long does the procedure take? (To fix the root canal)
2. Will I be place to take a nap during the procedure?
3. Will it hurt afterwards?
4. Will anything have to be place on my teeth afterwards?

I’m 13, by the way. Thanks! :)

    1 about an hour
    2 maybe
    3 YES
4 – I did not require ‘anything’ place on my teeth after.

recover time varies but expect several days of misery

Here’s what happened when I had mine. They gave me some local anesthetic shots, so I was very awake. Then they drilled a hole in my tooth so they could get to the roots. Then they scraped out my roots with this small brushy looking thing. My tooth was really terrible, so they had to give me additional local anesthetic shots every once in a while – then they packed where they had cleaned out my roots. Now I can’t remember when I got my crown place back on – but it wasn’t as terrible as people tell you it’s gonna be. It took maybe an hour – hour and 1/2. They clarified everything they were doing as they did it and showed me all the tools. It did hurt the first night, so I did take the pain pills and used hot and cold compresses on my jaw. It hurt the next day, but not as terrible. Question your dentist/endodontist if you can take ibuprofen before the root canal – they often say to do that to help with the pain ahead of time. My dentist said it was a excellent thought.

Root canal is no huge deal, they make it seem this way though, and they chrarge an arm and a leg. I had it done, and it doesn’t really hurt, just a small uncomfortable-like any dental work. But really I don’t even know why they charge so much. The crown is more complicated though, but not painfull.

well they usually do not do it all in one day usually the first day they just open it to medicate it and clean it out all the debris and then place a fleeting huge. your next appointment will be to fill it with a substance called gutta percha which protects the tooth and medicates it so that it will be like a habitual strong tooth the worst part is the shot you don’t get place to take a nap the first takes about 30 mins maybe less and the second takes 30 mins or more as for anything getting place on your teeth i don’t know what that means…they fill it with composite (white huge)

I had a root canal filled not so long ago. Local anaesthetic only – no need to be place to take a nap. I can’t remember that it took a particularly long time but obviously longer than an ordinary huge. It didn’t hurt during the proceedure but as the feeling came back, yes, it did. I have to be honest, but it was nothing that my favourite painkillers couldn’t handle. Just have some on hand ready. Once it settled down I forgot about it so cheer up, and excellent luck!
